Video transcript:
Did your tax return get rejected? This edition of Tax Tips by TurboTax will show you what to do if the IRS rejects your tax return.
First off, when you file your taxes with TurboTax, your chances of having a return rejected are low. That’s because we check and double-check your details for a complete and accurate return.
But if your e-filed return is rejected, we'll help pinpoint the reason why so you can resubmit your return.
Assuming a paper return isn’t required, we'll notify you when it's accepted by the IRS.
Here’s the rundown:
When you're unsuccessful at e-filing a return, the IRS generates a reject code so that you know exactly what information needs to be corrected. For example, if you incorrectly entered your Social Security number, you’ll see a reject code R0000-500-01.
If a dependent's Social Security number is missing, you’ll see a reject code 504-02. If you don’t know what a reject code means, try searching for that code on the TurboTax support website.
You can easily visit this website by clicking the link in this video’s description. You will see content that explains what certain codes means.
But what if you’re filing a paper return? If you’re filing a paper copy of your tax return, the IRS won't technically reject it because of missing or incorrect information.
However, your return won't be considered as filed until it's corrected. You’ll receive a notice in the mail requesting any missing information, so keep an eye on your mailbox.
Minor problems are easily corrected, but they can still delay the processing of your return. If you owe taxes, you may have to pay late-filing penalties if you're unable to make the corrections by the tax deadline.
